Mom, Could You Handle this Situation for Me?

This is one moment that a parent would dread having to handle:

A horrified 8-year-old boy watched as his pet turtle disappeared into an alligator's jaws at an aquarium in the Florida Panhandle.

Colton Guthrie had donated his pet red-eared slider, Tomalina, to the Gulfarium in Fort Walton Beach when the turtle outgrew her home aquarium. ... the family saw workers place Tomalina in an exhibit Thursday with other red-eared sliders and an alligator.

Though the alligator had long ignored the other turtles, Brenda Guthrie said the gator ate Tomalina as Colton shouted, "Oh no, alligator, let it go!"

The Gulfarium has apologized to the Guthries' and gave them a special meet-and-greet with the dolphins.

What could happen at the aquarium during a family visit that could be worse?

Oh yes, falling into an aquarium's shark tank like these folks did, of course.

oh dear. tell the kid the truth (he chomped your turtle to bits - it's the circle of life) or lie (turtle's cleaning his teeth)? tough decision!

Oh, Dear... That poor child. That would really be a hard one. Damage control mode for a while I guess. Hope the dolphins helped a little. :(

yikes, that is a tough one. As a parent you try to do the right thing and then ... well chomp.

I hope the family enjoyed their visit with the dolphins.

How sad ~ but as the child saw his pet disappear into the alligators jaws he must know it had been eaten ~ my advice would be don't ever donate another living creature to an aquarium unless you are prepared to watch it die :O) ~ Ally x

Oh God- poor kid! I'm not a fan of any water predators. I used to even freak myself out in the swimming pool thinking some kind of water snake had wandered in...

How sad!!! I'm not sure how dolphins and turtles relate but I guess they're friendly than alligators! FYI-I think you would enjoy a pedicure.

Slamdunk:
Not the best way for a former "pet" to wind up...

A very tough call for a parent.
Better to keep the turle, and on a short leash.

Right in front of him, that sucks!

However, I don't trust any animal. Don't get me wrong I love them but I have a respect for them and their inherent behaviors. I don't care what they say, you put food near another animal, the chances are they may eat it. He hadn't had the time to let him becaome one of the others. In fact there's a way to enter an animal into the lair of another's more safely. So they don't think of them as food.

Meet-and-greet with the dolphins sounds kind of fun, though :)

I guess it's time to explain the circle of life!

The aquarium should have been more careful about the way they released the turtle. That's an awful thing for the little boy to watch!

That is so sad!!
Poor guy.

Reminds me of the airline story where they would not let them take their pet turtles on the plane so they had to leave them in the trash.

*apparently someone took them out and a family came to the airport so all was okay in the end*

OH SAD! I had a pet turtle growing up and that would be devastating (well losing any pet would be). How horrible. I don't get why his turtle was there?!? I hope the Dolphins make up for it! Sad.

Oh, how sad. But I do agree, shark tank would suck.

jodeeluna said...

That would be traumatic for a child to witness. They should have given him more than a visit with dolphins.

Oh. My. Goodness.

It's official, I have the most terrible, horribly dark sense of humour EVAARRRR!

Ok; I get that it is sad that this kid's pet died, sad for the turtle, sad for the parents. But, happy for the alligator though!

The irony just has me giggling. I am a bad person, aren't I? (lol, giggle)

For the record: I don't think it's funny that the kid lost his pet. That part IS hard to swallow.
