Cowboy Cookout

Note: I did not receive any company perks for the following post.  The products listed are for the sole purpose of retelling a story to make fun of me--always an easy target.

Inside a store, I am busy minding the little crew as they entertain themselves by looking at rotating and revolving product displays.

I notice a canned item on nearby shelf and read the label:

Cowboy Cookout is prepared with Beef, Sweet Potatoes, Carrots, Green Beans, and Granny Smith Apples.
Yum.

Interested, I look at another labeled product on the same shelf:
Venison Holiday Stew is prepared with Venison, Red Jacket New Potatoes, Carrots, Zucchini, Sugar Peas, and Red Apples.
Wow.

With appetite awakened, I reached for a third can, but my mouth-watering reading was interrupted by the Mrs.:

Are you through reading the organic dog food meals so that we can go?

-------------------------

I am not sure I would buy this high-end stuff from Merrick Pet Care for our household's canine version of Pacman, but the descriptions of their gourmet dog delicacies sure put me in a dinner mood.

Haha. You really had me! Especially since I ate a version of venison this x-mas. Happy New Year!

I can see myself in this exact situation. Those label designers sound like decent writers.

Pop used to make a dish called Cowboy Pot Roast. Boy was it good, and our dog loved it too!

Don't feel bad Slam, we are all fooled by this at one time or another 'cause…

…everything nowadays is designer this, designer that.

They did sound yummy until I realized all those flavors would be blended into one brown mess. Yuck!

I knew you were reading dog food labels. My dog's is salmon and sweet potatoes. She has itchy skin unless we feed her this gourmet organic food...I think she eats better than we do!

I wondered about the one weird ingredient in those cans.... hmmmm. Dogs eat better than humans. :O)

In my supermarket they've installed a refrigerator that carries gourmet dog food! Yeah, no.

OMG! Hilarious!!! I really LOLed with that one. Matt would TOTALLY do something like that. Thanks for the laugh!

Well I can't say I blame you. There's nothing about that label that makes you think pet food. I wouldn't be at all surprised if folks have taken it home for their own consumption. Still funny though. :)

Slamdunk:

Had ME going for it as well...LOL.
(sure SOUNDED good)

Happy New Year.

*spew* I was a little worried about the apples in the ingredient list. And it was dog food!! Ha ha!

I'd have a hard time feeding that to my dog, given the level of hunger among humans in our own country, let alone from a global perspective. When we have pets eating better than people, we should note a wealth distribution problem. Sorry if that sounds pretentious. It isn't meant to.

Ahahahahaha! This was so awesome! I almost spit out my tea.

My mouth was watering, too, right up till the word "dog".

Great post.

Too funny!!

I've got one for ya. I just saw a can of Heinz Spotted Dick. My boyfriend and I looked at eachother and said at the same time. "I don't wanna know" We found out later that it's a british dessert with dried fruit. Even the picture was scary and unappetizing. So of course I posted it on facebook.

I am always dumbfounded by the 48% pet ownership of us Americans.. So, now dogs are giving back in terms of revenue to a few elite businesses.. ;) See, dog-eat-dog world literally!
Have a fantastic and vibrant new year, 2011!

Well they sure sounded like people food to me! And the labels don't exactly look like dog products either. Who could blame you for making such a mistake?

lifeshighway said...

Ah ha ha, I was with you to the end thinking some of those recipes sounded pretty darn good. In fact maybe I should try putting them together without the dog food part, of course.

Dear Slamdunk,
I surely do agree with the Lt. on this one. It is conspicuous consumption.

I was also reminded of a can of human chili I ate last month with "shaped" meat nuggets. Oh, yuk! Never again.

LOL, you had me in total stitches, Slam. I had no idea those were dog food labels! Brilliant!

Now if all those ingredients came separately, on a large plate, around about Christmas, for instance - rather than mooshed together as brown gloop for poor Fido - I'd pop over for lunch! :-)

HAHAHAHAHA! I can totally see why you would be attracted to the cans. Made me hungry, too, and it's only 8:00 a.m.

Since when did dogs go hunting for sweetcorn, green beans or apples?! LOL :)

LOL! Hilarious. Sidenote: Good thing you read the label first :).

You do realize all pet food must be made fit for human consumption.Makes a guy wonder when there are four cans of pet food and a loaf of bread on the grocery conveyor in front of you.

Confessions of a Mother, Lawyer & Crazy Woman said...

HAHAHA! Yum! Love that some dogs probably eat as well as their people.

Moannie said...

Thank you for a great story and laugh.Every time I feed my dog I am convinced he eats better than we do.

Congrats. on a POTW mention.

The descriptions sound mouth watering for sure.

Now that's funny!
I was wondering what the cashier at Walgreen's might have been thinking about my basket of Poptarts and canned cat food yesterday. "Just another whacko on a diet," probably.
