I Would Pick Tasker over Sheen and Lohan Any Day

If you were unsuccessful in wading through all of the Charlie Sheen and Lindsay Lohan "news" this week, you may have missed this story:

The body of a soldier who died along with his record breaking sniffer dog in Afghanistan last week has returned home to the UK.

Lance Corporal Liam Tasker, from Kirkcaldy in Fife, was shot dead while on patrol in Helmand province.

The ashes of the 26-year-old's dog Theo were flown home on the same plane.

L/Cpl Tasker, who was called a "rising star" by Army chiefs, was shot by Taliban snipers and Theo died of a seizure shortly after his master.

The soldier and his 22-month-old dog had made 14 finds in five months while on the frontline.

The pair's successes at uncovering so many explosions and weapons had resulted in their tour of Afghanistan being extended by a month...

Tasker and Theo's duty had been extended a month after all of the lives they had saved by detecting explosives only to die there--strange world in which we live.

Whatever the reason for the deaths of Lance Corporal Tasker and Theo, there are lessons to be learned.

Rest in peace.

Also, as the former owner of a springer spaniel like Theo ("Sara" was with us for 14 years and allowed me to meet my wife so many years ago), I can't say enough good things about the breed.

I have managed to avoid Sheen Lohan news - I know what is happening, but I am OVER these fruitcakes. A story about this soldier and his dog is much more inline with what the world needs to know about and care about.

Great story of a great soldier with a sad ending. Book and movie material...that one. As for Sheen and Lohan...ugh.

Sad story. :(

On a related side note, my mom just got a Springer puppy, and it is driving her absolutely mad. Any tips?

This story made me tear up. It's so tragic. Well, thank you for posting this instead of the other news. This deserves it more.

So the extension was supposed to be a reward? Some reward.

Now that was more worthy news than listening to the problems of Sheen and Logan. Those two need a reality check.

What a hero to be remembered!!! Who cares about those other two. Get help people!!! Rant over..... :O)

Slam Dunk,

Welcome back. I do hope all is well on your end. Healing to begin.

This is a sad but powerful story. Though I am not patriotic and such, I think it take huge, huge courage to fight for our country. I also have a heart for dogs. THis pair served "us" well.

Nice post.

p.s. Sheen and Lohan both have major issues that are extremely obvious. Both are very sick people very much in denial of their illnesses. Because they are in the spotlight, they are getting a tap on the wrist and sent away to continue their sickness. It will probably take another person reaping the negative consequences of their actions to get them truly locked up.

Sad....

Have a Facebook conversation going on about the media being stupid. People are posting items similar to yours. While doing some light research on the matter (really light) I came across this:http://freedomremembered.com/

Worth the visit.

Pray for peace.

Welcome Back, SD!

Have missed your well written prose... and this story, brought a crocodile tear to my eye.

Best wishes sent to your own father - hard to see them age and suffer and struggle, isn't it?

That totally sucks. That's sweet that they were flown home together. Thanks for sharing Slam.

I saw this in the newspaper last night and cried. So much more worthy of reporting that Sheen's tantrums.

This story makes me want to cry. Thanks for spotlighting this and shedding some much-needed perspective after too much Sheen and Lohan.

Wow! Talk about touching. This is the stuff of the real world...or real life. The other stuff is make believe.

I have to agree that there is nothing newsworthy about either Lohan or Sheen. And the real shame is that idiots like that keep the media from covering the real deserving news stories.

Best wishes to your father.

That's sad. And far more important news than anything about celebrities.

It's such a heartbreaking loss. As the mother of a soldier, it's my biggest nightmare.

Oh, I am hating myself right now! I was watching a show with a pushy friend when we got sucked into the nightly news during a commercial break. We watched a segment and then it showed this story as a "coming up next" after commercial, my friend and I decided to go back to our show because we had wanted to watch it- I so wish I had watched the segment! I really wanted to but she kept pushing me not to. Ugh, I had no idea it was such a deep story. That is insane and is so sad and heart-warming at the same time :( Springer Spaniels are definitely cute but it is hard for me to find a breed that I don't feel that way about.

How sad that most prefer gossip over courage and bravery. Not caring that…

Do you think that Theo had a seizure over the stress of seeing his master being shot? I can't type for crying. That is so terribly sad.

God bless those two. Both are heroes. It is a heartbreaking story.

Thanks for sharing this story.

I too would pick THIS over ANY of those celebs ANY day.
THIS man (and his dog) were REAL role models...heroes.

Stay safe.

Hi Slam!

Nice post, you're right, some facts no have the relevance deserved in the newspapers and television world's. Charlie and Lindsay, two nonsenses, occupy the entire space. Is that why people are getting increasingly more superficials and concerned only with their "belly buttons"?

Blessings and Peace.

Ha, thanks for the title.. Says a lot to us as a society of pop culture fanatics.. :)
The post gave me shudders thinking of movies like, "No man's land"..
But what is most bothersome is that the son returning from Deployment returns in the coffin and he is just about to end his duty to return home.. Unbearable..

Oh I remember reading about this - so terribly sad. Too many fine young lives have already been lost on what I think may ultimately be a futile cause.

You're obviously frantically busy at the moment. Hope things are OK.
