This is what it is like.

Past the rolling hills and open fields where current New York Giants fullback Henry Hynoski used to bulldoze those who dared try and tackle him.
Near the town that is on fire. I mean really on fire. Underground. Since 1962.
Beyond America's largest free admission (pay per ride) amusement park--a place well off the beaten-path.
Along side the mining operations that have dominated the landscape for so many years.
Past the hidden secret of the ugliest side of unchecked strip mining: acid-mine drainage.
Yes, that water is yellow.
We cross the bridge and enter coal town.
Win or lose, we'll play two games, and then make the long drive home.

Since we did win one, we will start our trek to Coal Town over again tomorrow.
And who said parents with kids don't get to see the world?

That last photo... I feel like I've been there!
Well, I really appreciate your Giants reference. (My other team...) I really think it's going to be a rematch b/w Giants and NE. Hopefully Brady can redeem himself ;)
and a town that's literally on fire???? I've never heard of that! How long has it been on fire for? Crazy! I'm googling this right now...
Wow. That's a lot of ugly crap. At least the basketball game at the end of the road should be nice.
An underground fire??!! Omg that is the craziest thing i've read all week! (wait...i take that back. Last night i read about a bridge in scottland where dogs commit suicide. Serious)
That's just begging for a story
Is this in Pennsylvania? I've heard of that town on fire underground before.
This is a drive. I'm not sure how I'd feel about the ground collapsing at any moment.
Ha -- The ground is prone to suddenly collapse.
Um ... Okay ...

Hmmm I think this is a case when the scenic route must be avoided, doesn't seem to inviting.
I love watching basketball! We watch our two oldest Grandlittles play now!
Underground mine fire sounds scary.
Have a great weekend.
Slamdunk:
Ah, Centralia, PA...where cracks grew upon the streets, closing that town forever...damn shame.
Coal regions of Pennsy...reminds me of Pittsburgh...where the air is brown and the people are as smart of house plants...at least that's what they USED to say.
My guess is that since the undustries up and left, and people did likewise...should be a lot nicer there now.
Hope your team WINS big...and your trip finds you safely back home again.
Have a great weekend.
have fun at the games...and errr...enjoy the sights on the way...smiles.
How to Have Fun with Hoops!
Happy Weekend :)
Enjoy your "travels." :O)
Oh wow, that is interesting. Yuck, I'd hate to fall in that yellow acid run-off stuff! Now that my daughter is on the competitive gymnastics team, we've been traveling a lot too. Next up is Dallas, TX!
I've always wanted to visit Pennsylvania.
Interesting trip Slam … I have read about the ongoing fire a couple of times.
Blessings - Maxi
Wow.. I've heard of being under fire before but never over it.
Thanks for the peek inside a place I never get to see.
wow o yea Slam..Go Giants!..lol It's a snowy weekend here in NYC!:)
As much as I miss the days when my kids were younger, I can't say I miss those "tournament weekends." It's nice to have the weekends back to myself again.
At least you get to see some interesting sites along the way.
Okay, wow. That town on fire? I have never heard of that. How scary is that sign?!
But I loved getting a taste of your travels. Very cool post. :)
The colour of that water is scary. Some sights really are quite sobering....
I hope it'll be well worth the trip ;)
This year I started off in deep dislike of all the running we've done for my daughter's bball team, but totally loving it now.
And I know it's late, but I read this post in Dora's voice (as in the Dora the Explorer). Sigh.
I'm offically signing off for the night.
Interesting sights to see along the way. Wow -- underground fire!
Well, have fun at the games :)
I've never been to a coal town. Thanks for sharing these pictures.
Big football game today, eh?
Enjoy the exploration and time with family. Precious.
What interesting places you live by. I like these family friendly posts.
Wow, that's a fascinating (and creepy) story about Centralia. I like the warning sign about the dire consequences of being on that land!
Ground is prone to sudden collapse. Yeah, I think that's enough to keep me out.
At least you are well-traveled. ;-)
