Just When You Thought It Was Safe for a Vacation

It makes sense that burglars need research to identify the best residential targets:
SAN CARLOS (CA) — A couple is behind bars Wednesday morning after investigators linked them to multiple residential burglaries—a crime spree prosecutors say was made possible by the wife’s knowledge of vacant homes through her job boarding dogs at the PetSmart store in San Carlos.

Ashley Kirk and Juan Ortega-Ramos, both 24-year-old San Jose residents, were rearrested in Discovery Bay on Monday after a five-month investigation by San Mateo County sheriff’s detectives...

...the couple would identify a vacant home after a dog was checked in at the pet store, and allegedly committed numerous residential burglaries, stealing electronics, jewelry, and in one instance a silver Porsche 991S from a Portola Valley home…
We have been fortunate to have several friends who are willing house-sitters when we go on family vacations--which is not that often. With conflicting schedules though, we usually have one or more persons left behind on pet duty.

When away, do you kennel your pets, bring them, or use a house/pet sitter?

Hopefully if you kennel, these two faces do not look familiar.

Since we tend to have lots of farm animals (horses, chickens) boarding isn't really an option. We exchange pet watching w/ our neighbors, who also have farm animals. So it usually works out well. This past time my neighbors left, though, their dog was run over by a car (or something - we don't really know, but he was a car chaser so we're guessing). His foot was shattered and he had a big gouge in it. They didn't want us to take him to the emergency vet for them, because they were worried about the cost. They ended up coming back early, and working with their vet. It would've been 2K to fix it, so instead the vet just put a cast on, and it'll heal but he won't ever be able to use it again. I felt bad their vacation got cut short.

That so irritating. Ugh. Can't trust anyone anymore.

Three movies over a 30 second gunfight.

I don't have any pets right now, but I will pass this post on to my mother-in-law, who has four. Thanks for the info :)

We are new dog owners and have not had to come up with a plan yet for vacations. I'm thinking some lucky relative will be left holding the reigns after this story.

I get someone to come watch them, the one whole time I went on vacation, lol

we switched to house sitters when kenneling the dog went to $25-30 a night! With the petting zoo we have now, we couldn't afford to go on vacay if we had to board everyone!

Slamdunk:
It's like I say to Wifey...never think that someone is NOT watching your house, or NOT paying attention to what YOU do in life.
We have too many "busy-bodies" with too much criminal intent to ignore them.
And to do so DOES cost us.

It's not the world of our parents, that's for sure.

And never take things for granted...mo matter who you deal with for whatever reason.

Stay safe out there.

We get someone to come to the house, or even stay here. Even if i could afford to put all of the cats at the vet's office, i like my vet too much to do that to her and her staff, my cats would protest and make nuisances of themselves.

I have heard of burglars targeting a home after a death since they know everyone will be at the funeral. Imagine coming home from a funeral and finding your home robbed.
We had relatives look after our cat when we went away, but we lost our cat this past year. We had her for 16 years.

oy, def a job that would be easy to take advantage of and know when people are away....that sucks.

Before our dog passed away we used to exchange dog sitting with our neighbor.

People are overcome with greed these days, slam.

People have become greedy and want easy money. Burglaries happen here too.

What a scheme!! I never thought about that kind of conniving but it sure makes sense.... We always have kids from the college nearby watch our cat, but of course, dogs need a lot more attention.
