Should Have Dated a Hygienist

I switched dentists recently, and the hygienist jabbing and scraping me at my appointment was named Kyleen.

She is very nice, and we have lots in common.

She runs and enjoyed talking about her previous "mudders" and other endurance challenges.

It made me think about how well that I always hit-it-off with those cleaning my teeth.

There was the twenty-something who laughed about her one-year stay at a big state university. And for just two semesters, she seemed to have an endless bag of stories. She said she did not study much, but sure had a load of fun.

Then there was the middle-aged artist. She had traveled extensively out West, and we shared favorite stops along Route 66.

Finally, the "mom" had lots to talk about as well. Her son wanted to be a police officer, and she expressed her hopes and concerns via long crime discussions, breaking the conversation briefly with an occasional order to "open wide" or "close just a bit."

Maybe I should have focused on dating dental hygienists exclusively when I was a single guy.

I do wonder something though.

Would my time with them be less enjoyable if I could get a few words in edgewise?

I mean the hygienists dominate the conversation during cleanings as I recline with a mouth full of metallic objects and spraying water.

Ha, perhaps that is for the best.

I get along well with doctors and people who work in IT. You should have dated a hygienist ;)

I get along with just about everyone but anyone having a job with animals or romance authors, I get along with really well.

Nothing comes to mind, but recently we in for a cleaning and those ladies can certainly talk your ear off. Maybe it's a prerequisite to the job. Lol

I've had the same hygienist for years. She's nice but she doesn't talk that much. I like her because she's very gentle.

A certain occupation. Hmmm. Not that comes to mind.

I love my local post office workers~ we chat about their lives and one of them gives my kids gifts now and then (she knitted the most beautiful blanket for my 2nd daughter when she was born). I also seem to get along with the grocery store clerks really well and the people at the butcher counter.

When I go to the hair salon or dentist I must give off the "don't talk to me" vibe. We discuss the essentials but then I close my eyes and just am happy to sit. You must be too friendly or have a "I want to hear your life story" face..... either way your own fault, I guess..... ;)

Slamdunk:
I can relate (to being a true conversationalist and not spending time having my skull drilled).

I much prefer a TWO-way conversation, unless I'm listening to a lecture or speech.

I struck up talk with everyone from strangers at airports to actors at conventions to heads of state in the Netherlands...never gets boring, that's for sure.
It's true about having commonalities.
Very good post.

Stay safe out there.

lol A few weeks in edgewise. I was thinking you got along because you were so personable.

lol well they all must like it because they just get to talk and you are at their mercy if you mutter something wrong, "did that hurt" oops

I guess there's always someone I've met and got along with from almost any occupation, and always a few from the same occupation that I'd rather not see again. But even those few, I consider them food for future story. I'd definitely be writing what about your dentist. :-)
I do love to talk to authors and publishers, artists, and lawyers or people in law enforcement – because these are my highest interests. Cooking, well not so much, but I do love to eat and my husband loves to cook, so I don't mind grabbing a good recipe and giving it to him. :-)

Really i do get along with most people. There's always something to find out about them, about their work, why they like it, what's not so good about it, what they do in their off time. Everyone has a story, and with most people, i enjoy hearing it.

What's your wife think about this post!?! But true, hygienists are always easy to talk with. I remember when I went before my wedding and talked about Matt's bachelor party. When I went back 6 months later, she had notes about the bachelor party and asked how it went!

I've never encountered an unfriendly hygienist. I think being chatty with the patients is part of their job description.

ha. dentists are rather low on my list...they hold you captive audience hand and drill in your mouth...oh i would like an artist i think...ha...

Hairstylists...when you get a good one, that trip to the salon can be more fun than a girls' night! That's very frustrating to me--you go to the hygienist and she's talking away, but you can't talk back at all! I feel like I'm being antisocial.

You must know the Dentist song from "Little Shop of Horrors". If not, look it up, Steve Martin plays the dentist. It's funny.
Dental hygienists? Like you, I have always gotten on very well with them. I wanted to be one myself but with my asthma, I couldn't stand that first Anatomy class with the formaldehyde.

I go for a periodontal cleaning once a year. The woman who cleans my teeth - well, we have the best time. She is big into animals so now that I have adopted a kitty there is even more to talk about...She is a few years older than me and incredibly interesting.

The hygienists at my dental office are very chatty too. I always admire their ability to carry on a one-sided conversation.

I'm not aware of getting along with people in any specific occupation. I'm just likely to interact well with anyone who is outgoing and friendly. If someone else is quiet and reserved, I tend to be the same.

LOL! I also marvel at how hygienists can carry on a one-sided conversation. I always wonder if I'm suppose to really answer when they ask me a question! Like I could anyway……...
