Bug TV

At around 11 pm, just about every night, I let the dogs out back for their final potty break.

Our two juvenile brother cats know this, and when they hear movement around the back door, they will come running--jumping around the dining room to get a high vantage point.

I turn on the outside light, pull open and then close the sliding glass door, two dogs prance into the backyard, and the show begins.

Welcome to Bug TV.

Attracted by the illumination and prevalent in the non-urban area that I live, warm weather bugs flock toward the light.

Moths swirl around the glass.

Smaller unidentified bugs hover around the bulb.

Usually a June bug will join the show--clumsily bouncing off the window, light, or anything else nearby.

The cats are mesmerized by the array of activity.

Occasionally, a cat overcome with emotion will lunge at June bug or moth.

Fur flying through the air.

The results are comedic and expected: "hunter" cat bounces off the door frame or glass and then makes a thud just inside the door.

Bug TV is certainly not a "paws" on experience for our indoor-only felines, but at least there is never a rerun.

I'll just say that the kids are not the only ones around here who enjoy summer.

haha keeping their reflexes alive until they crash into the door. Bugs make for a good cat show.

The mayflies are crazy this time of year at our place. I'd like to change the channel on Bug TV.

Lol well, this sounds like a show worth watching. I'm off to Google June Bug to see how lucky I am that I've never seen one. Haha

You remind me of when I let the cat in at night. I try not to let bugs in as she takes her time. Meanwhile all the moths and flies circle the porch light. One or two always manage to come in. Then I either let the cat get them or I use the swatter. Happy summer!

Slamdunk:
Much the same goes on with our cat and the birds who come by to eat on the patio.
The movement fascinates him, but not as much as it used to with our female cat.
The male is still with us, but is getting old (18 years), so ';m sure his mind wants to jump all over...but the body says "take it easy".

Hood post.

Stay safe out there.

Enjoy your summer. For us the monsoons have started.

The same thing happens to us at "Last Call." Our patio door is in the den, so it's hard to avoid. However, I don't have cats, which might keep the population down. Sounds like a fun few minutes of entertainment at your house. :)

I let my dog out for that last break and live in fear that she'll encounter a skunk! She's been sprayed twice already. We bought her a little collar with a light on it that lights up everything in front of her as she walks, but I'm not sure that would keep a skunk from spraying.

Awww... the poor babies. And you laugh at them!

We do the same with my son's kitten, who flips in the air when a fly zooms by. He looks like Gumby on speed!

It's such fun to watch cats watching bugs or birds through a window!

Ummmm....perhaps you need to get out a bit more. :-)
Just kidding. We live in a rural area too. Peanut has been having a lot of fun catching fireflies this summer. Now, the cicadas are loudly serenading us every night. I could do without the horse flies though...and mosquitoes...and Japanese beetles....and......
Hope you're having fun at the beach.

Don't tell anyone, but there is nothing more fun than watching a dog (or cat) careening into a back door on the hunt for the elusive bug/thing.

And, do they learn their lesson?

No, of course not.... hours of fun :)

What? I'm a simple guy with simple comedic needs :)

PS: Have a great vacation and happy sunrises - and sunsets, too!

Pets provide some of the best entertainment, don't they? We don't have cats anymore, but there was a time we enjoyed similar shows at our house. Our cat seemed to have springs in her feet. She could leap SO high up the patio door in an attempt to catch a fly or other bug! These days, we get a good laugh out of watching our dog chase spots of light around the living room when the sun glares off a pair of glasses or a cell phone.

LOL! Exactly a few of the reasons we miss our pets. Hope you didn't get buried on that beach last summer, everyone here is missing your posts!
